About the Author
Blandine Calais-Germain's lifelong involvement with dance, both as performer and teacher, eventually led to an interest in other physical disciplines, and then to more formal study of the complex and integrated movements of the body. From 1977 to 1980 the author studied physiotherapy at the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris. In physiotherapy, body movements are analyzed both in terms of their neurophysiological and mechanical aspects, which allows for a better understanding of the actual mechanisms of movement. From her work with dance and physiotherapy, the author developed an innovative method for teaching the physical structures of anatomy in relation to movement. This method, the subject of her companion volumes Anatomy of Movement and Anatomy of Movement: Exercises, has been enthusiastically received in workshops that she presented for many years in France. Her two books have been translated and published throughout the world in many languages.

This book is most useful for providers who care for pregnant women, and for pregnant women who want to improve their obstetric outcomes. The content is not known by the vast majority of US midwives or OB providers, so a pregnant woman who is interested in this subject will have to do some hard study! The pelvic bones are fused, but there is some flexibility at the ligaments that join the bones, and that flexibility increases in pregnancy. By moving into certain positions, the passageway for the fetus to be born can be stretched a bit, increasing the odds of vaginal birth. The combination of appropriate weight gain in pregnancy (to grow the right size of baby), walking in pregnancy and at delivery (to encourage the fetal head to engage in the most favorable position) and movement of the pelvis at delivery can help to improve the process of birth, and perhaps lower our C-section rate.
This book is my handbook on pelvic floor information and exercises that help you become aware of all the complex muscles. The first one I have read that tries to clear the fog and does not lump all muscle action into a "kegel." It clearly distinguishes surface muscle movements from deeper muscle movements, as well as separating pelvic floor muscle control from abs and glutes. The concept is getting you to visualize the areas first in order to get a picture in your mind before trying to activate the muscles. It works a lot better that way. I am still working on it and wish there was a way to talk with someone directly for feedback. My physical therapist has agreed with most of what I have asked about from this book.
I suffer from pelvic organ prolapse (grade 3 cystocele & rectocele, grade 1 uterine) after damage from vaginal delivery of my first child.I have purchased Hold it Sister by Mary O'Dwyer, POP: Silent Epidemic by Sherrie Palm, the Hab-It DVD, the Pfilates DVD, the Myself Trainer, the Kegel8 Ultra, and have had numerous appointments with PTs, urogynocologists and other specialists. Everything has been somewhat helpful, but if I had to pick just one product to buy for the most effect, it would be The Female Pelvis by Blandine Calais-Germain.She breaks down different muscle groups in such detail that you can really target them individually, rather than just trying to 'lift the pelvic floor'. I will buy this for anyone I meet who has pelvic floor issues, that's how good I think it is.
This is a good basic anatomy book for the female pelvis. It is easy to read and has good information. I am a physical therapist that treats female pelvic issues and I find that it will be a good for new PTs or students to review the information. Experienced therapists can gain perspective as well. It will also be a good learning tool to offer my patients.
I'm going to just be real frank here, since you're looking at this book, you probably don't mind: I did the exercises in this book while I was pregnant and after having my baby. I did not have a problem of peeing when I sneezed while I was pregnant UNLESS I went a few days without doing the Kegel muscle exercises. I pushed out a 10 pound baby with no episiotomy and no anesthesia and had a very minor first degree tear that did not require stitches. I also attribute this to some stretching exercises in addition to this book, and to laboring and pushing in warm water. But this book definitely helped me prepare and recover my pelvis and understand better what was going on down there.
Excellent resource for pregnant women and pilates teacher wanting to work with pregnant women (I am both)!
I am required to read this book for a course I have enrolled in. Thank goodness! This book is remarkable. It is a book I highly recommend to any woman professional or other, interested to learn more about her pelvis. A gorgeous book, well written and highly important for all
I'm still making my way through this book. It's very well-written and informative for someone who is interested in maintaining appropriate tone in this area. The explanations are quite good, and I haven't more than the basic knowledge of anatomy.
