"This day a herd of twenty-eight giraffes tantalized me by descending a short distance below the level flats, and I was tempted at all hazards across the river. Accordingly preparations were immediately made for a start. The sheik of the village and several of the Arabs were hippopotami hunters by profession; these fellows could swim like otters, and, despite the crocodiles, they seemed as much at home in the water as on land. We prepared an impromptu raft. My angarep (bedstead) was quickly inverted; six water-skins were inflated, and lashed, three on either side. A shallow packing-case, lined with tin, containing my gun, was fastened in the centre of the angarep, and two tow-lines were attached to the front part of the raft, by which swimmers were to draw it across the river. Two men were to hang on behind, and, if possible, keep it straight in the rapid current.

"There was not much delay in the launch. I stepped carefully into my coffin-shaped case, and squatted down, with a rifle on either side, and my ammunition at the bottom of the tin-lined water-proof case; thus, in case of an upset, I was ready for a swim. Off we went!"

"This being a concise summary of the Nile system, I shall describe twelve months' exploration, during which I examined every individual river that is tributary to the Nile from Abyssinia, including the Atbara, Settite, Royan, Salaam, Angrab, Rahad, Dinder, and the Blue Nile."
Sir Samuel Baker, who had spent a number of years in Ceylon in the mid-19th century was eager to explore new territories. The source of the Nile was still a great mystery in the 1800's. European speculation about Africa had long existed: ancient authors like Herodotus and Strabo wrote about it, and British schoolboys grew up wildly excited and eager to go there from reading these authors. David Livingstone, Richard Burton, John Speke, and Samuel Baker, among others, would base their expeditions partially upon these ancient texts. (Now aren't you sorry that you didn't learn Latin?)
Baker's earlier travels through Africa had led him to the lake that he named after Prince Albert. Now he was back in Africa to continue not only his exploration of the Nile and its tributaries, but also for ethnographic research, and hunting. Well, actually for hunting along the Nile tributaries.
He spent many hours with the Arabs of the region, and the book is full of his trenchant observations about their customs. He was especially thrilled when he found the Harman sword hunters, for he had heard of their skill in elephant hunting by sword alone. Here is his description of that important weapon:

"The Arabs are extremely proud of a good sword, and a blade of great value is carefully handed down through many generations. The sheiks and principal people wear silver-hilted swords. The scabbards are usually formed of two thin strips of elastic but soft wood, covered with leather. No Arab would accept a metal scabbard, as it would destroy the keen edge of his weapon. The greatest care is taken in sharpening the swords. While on the march, the Arab carries his weapon slung on the pommel of his saddle, from which it passes beneath his thigh. There are two projecting pieces of leather, about twelve inches apart, upon the scabbard, between which the thigh of the horseman fits, and thus prevents the sword from slipping from its place. Carried in this position at full speed, there is an absence of that absurd dangling and jumping of the sword that is exhibited in our British cavalry, and the weapon seems to form a portion of the rider."
Baker crossed deserts littered with camel skeletons, camped along riverbeds near hippopotami, and hunted the numerous animals of the Nile basin. From desert nomads he learned how Arab women perfume themselves, and from conversation with sheiks he learned the histories of the various tribes. And oh for the resourcefulness of the traveler:

Baker does describe the Nile tributaries but the majority of his time seems to be taken up with his hunting: wild game and people are just more interesting to him. Yes, he can be pompous, but the world has shrunk since Baker's day, and his book captures all the excitement of being in new territory. A great workbook for the New PSAT. It covers the concepts in from the College Board test well and there's a lot of practice problems to use. This is C2's first publication online and it is good to see them release jointly with another group, especially a group that released a strong New SAT guide.I like the lesson content inside. The problems fit well in the scope of the test and the challenge problems and harder problems are great to push the bar with some students. I hope they release practice test-only books soon because the quality is great and content is much better than what I have so far.

This a wonderfully made book in conjunction with Test Prep Genius. We were very familiar with Test Prep Genius' New SAT materials, and were thrilled when they agreed to partner with C2 on this New PSAT book. The lessons are excellent. There are a plethora of practice problems (over 300), and one full length practice tests. The book is used at C2 Education centers for their own PSAT programs, and C2 is proven to get amazing results. Highly recommend the book. As a bonus, anyone who comes in with the book purchased gets a free additional practice test at a C2 center.

I like to get a couple of workbooks and go through them fully to prepare for a test. This book does that. It has a ton of helpful questions and even some challenging ones to help you prepare for the PSAT. The book follows the blueprint for the test very closely and is the most accurate book Iâ€™ve seen so far.

This is a nice comprehensive workbook useful for the New PSAT. There are plenty of practice problems to work with and it has a good solid full practice test at the end.C2 has a lot of centers around the country and the fact that this book is being used at the centers is a definite plus. It means the workbooks have a network of tutors to back up with the content builders do. A lot of other prep books are outsourced to one-time developers so sometimes, itâ€™s hard to maintain consistency in the quality of curriculum. I look forward to future publications between C2 and Test Prep Genius.

About the Author

Lance Keimig has been photographing at night for nearly 30 years. Well-written and informative, a worthy second edition that seems largely re-written. The history of night photography is still there, and still absolutely fascinating. The book covers astro-landscape, long exposures in moonlight, star trails, light painting, light drawing, and post-processing for night photography with an emphasis on Lightroom, although the tips for post-processing can obviously be done in Photoshop or other programs as well. Lance also includes other photographers and their images, their personalities and approaches adding to the book's vibrancy overall. The book, even more than the first edition, offers a comprehensive look at the many facets of night photography, managing to cover it in one book. And yes, of course, the photos are mesmerizing, beautiful, fascinating, and gorgeously executed. It includes lots of scenarios and technical information about night photography. And that's what we want, isn't it?I am an experienced night sky, long exposure, Milky Way, light painting, and star trails photographer, and I nonetheless thoroughly enjoyed the book, picking up tidbits and philosophical approaches, and often affirming the good habits and approaches that I've done as well. And it's also feels great to know that other people feel the same way about night photography and how it offers a deeper connection into our surroundings.I want to also add that it is the sign of a really good teacher to take something technical, something that has the potential to be slightly intimidating or overwhelming, and break it down so that it is useful and easy to understand, but not pedantic or dumbed down. Lance has achieved that here. And since he gives photography workshops, I would bank on those being thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile. This is a book in which I believe seasoned veterans of night photography and beginners alike can embrace and love.

An ambitious book that mainly fulfills its objectives. There are shorter books that just answer the question, â€œwhat F-stop should I use.â€ This one starts with history, then â€œwhy,â€ and then â€œhow.â€ The author assumes you have only a passing understanding of the details of exposure interrelationships, but if you are experienced you can skip a few pages; likewise he spends a little time on Lightroom, which you can skip if you know Lightroom already (although the principles of image modification are the same whatever tools you use).Thereâ€™s plenty of image examples from his own and othersâ€™ work, including in-process examples showing the incremental impacts of post-processing steps. Perhaps most importantly, he is enthusiastic about night photography and leaves you eagerly awaiting sunset so you can zip outside and try it, even in your own backyard.

Consider this the "New Testament" of the excellent first edition. Neither of these books are necessarily aimed at the beginner, but will definitely take the experienced photographer's work to the next level. It is the fine-tuning of the details that separates a great night photograph from a good one, and this book is all about the details. From choosing the right gear to studying the movements of the night sky to post processing techniques, no stone is left unturned. Also included are many example photographs from contemporary night photographers showing the many directions night photography can take and how it is limited only by one's imagination.Beginners may find the technical explanations a bit overwhelming to grasp completely, but if you're already past that stage and have been wanting to elevate your night photography as far as you can, this is the only book you need.

I gave it to my brother for Christmas and he really loved it! He's already been playing with low light photography for a couple of years and loves to process photos on his computer. He told me this book had a lot of information he didn't have before, and great photos as well. So it was a good gift for an intermediate night photographer!

This book offers straight forward information, techniques and setting advice for multiple types of night photography including talking about the different types of bulbs you will encounter for more city based night photography. It's an excellent reference and helped me find my niche.

Great book with a lot of tips and tricks for anyone wanting to do night photography! I highly recommend this book. You can get the kindle version for $27.

I gave this as a gift to a photography hobbyist who is a very skilled and an advanced in her techniques- she loves this book.
